Beginners - How to Get Started / What to Expect

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

Welcome to UNSW Pole Society’s guide to getting started in pole dancing or pole fitness. Pole dancing is a welcoming community for everyone to participate in. You don’t need to have the fit body or fitness level, you just need the right attitude!

We’ll continue releasing beginner articles for pole enthusiasts to learn more and feel more prepared for starting their pole journey.

One of the important things when starting out is finding the right studio for you, here we have an easy map of pole studios in Sydney so you can find the right fit for you! With a range of locations we hope this helps you find your new pole home. Many studios offer trial classes so you can test out the studios to best suit your vibe.

On to one of the main questions you’re probably thinking about; do you have to wear little clothing and gigantic heels? Of course not! You can wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I would recommend a T Shirt and shorts for your first lesson. You can learn more about what to wear and what to bring in our next beginner’s guide post coming soon.

However it is important to note that skin will stick much better on the pole than fabric which is the main reason why many pole dancers wear less. However there are alternatives to this such as sticky leggings.

Things to expect

Your body might be sore

Body aches after a good session at the gym are pretty common so expect nothing less from pole fitness and you might feel a bit sore after your first lesson. Just like the gym you’ll gradually get more fit and the aching becomes less common.

The pole can hurt (but don’t be afraid)

If you’ve done a little research into pole fitness then you might have heard of the term ‘pole kisses’ as innocent as the term sounds it refers to the bruises that you can get while pole dancing. When desperately clinging your body to a metal pole can cause some bumps here and there, they're nothing to be afraid of and it’s completely normal. As time goes on and your skills develop, the pole burns that you may get eventually stop hurting. It can be hard at first but you develop a resistance and soon you won’t feel a thing!

Scantily clad classmates

Pole is an amazing way to gain body confidence so do not be surprised if you see other classmates walking around scantily clad don’t be alarmed, you should feel no pressure to conform. Wearing less can make it easier to do certain tricks on the pole or some pupils just prefer wearing outfits that make them feel confident and sexy during class. It is an incredibly safe environment so just do and wear what you’re more comfortable with.

You become hella strong

One of the main benefits of pole fitness is of course the fitness! It may surprise you how quickly you’re able to gain muscle when you’re pole dancing. Instructors always end up finding amazing ways to help you build muscle as you try new tricks and soon enough you’ll be lifting your body weight up on a pole before you know it!

Your confidence grows as you progress

Whether it’s your pole confidence or simply body confidence; pole dancing can do wonders. After nailing that first trick you spent weeks or even months on you get more excited to see all the amazing things your body can accomplish.

People progress differently

This might come as no surprise but different bodies work differently, you might see your classmates nail one trick first try that you’ve been working months on. But don’t be discouraged, everyone progresses in their own time. Some tricks will always come easier than others but this isn't something you should worry about, it’s all part of learning progress. There’s no reason to compare yourself to others competing with your own personal best should be your main goal.

You make a lot of friends along the way

People from all walks of life come and enjoy pole classes so don’t be surprised if you make a few new friends. It’s super fun meeting people from all different backgrounds coming together to enjoy a sport. The friends you make along the way can help encourage and be there for you during your entire pole journey and maybe even other aspects of your life.
